2007 review
Over all it was a great year for fishing. I would like to think it has something to do with limit reductions and the change in attitude of fishermen to more catch and release but in all fairness a lot has to do with the great year class we have had the last couple of years due to a longer growing season and warmer weather.
Most of those visiting Grassy Narrows Lodge fish for Walleye. I don’t think we have had a better year in the 20 Betty and I have owned the resort than in 2007. Our guest caught many big fish and glad to say most were returned to live another day. These are the fish that will keep Lake of the Woods one of the best fishing areas in Ontario. Chris Kolquist of Eden Praire caught the largest fish this year at 29", David Goodnature Owatona Mn and Hugh Norsted of Plymouth Mn. each caught a 28.5".
There is no doubt that the new 54” limit on Musky’s has improved Musky fishing on Lake of the Woods with most experts predicting the next world record to come from our lake. Terry Masandrea of Lake Zurich caught the biggest musky this year, 53.0". Lucas Deferville of Bartlett Il. caught a 52 and Rick Weyenberg of Hortonville Wi. caught a 51.0".
Small Mouth Bass is a species that is really not known about. Because of the local fishing tournaments which are held all around the lake, locals have become experts at catching them. Our guides are all great Small Mouth Fisherman taking top honors in them. Gerry and Karen Neu of Kenosha Wi. caught a 20” and 19” and Ryan Burns of Bradenton Fl. also caught a 19”.
Northern were also good at times. Jim Edwards, Schaumburg Il. caught one of the biggest Northern’s ever this year 45.0”. Brent Thornquist Omaha, Ne. and Janet Green Chicago Il. Both caught a 42.0”
It was also a good year for Crappies.
